Abstract

Because of its unique properties, synchrotron radiation is a powerful tool for characterisation from which it is possible to obtain specific information in various scientific domains and, in particular, in the field of the oil industry. This introductory article to the dossier 'Synchrotron and Neutron Solutions to Oil Industry Problems' proposes a brief but practical overview of synchrotron radiation as a tool, of its properties and of its applications in the hydrocarbon industry (from oil well to refined products).
